About the PGA Championship

The PGA Championship was first played in 1916 and is organised by the PGA of America — the organisation that represents the nation's club professionals and teaching pros. It was originally contested as a match play event, but switched to the 72-hole stroke play format in 1958, the format it uses today.

The PGA Championship is widely regarded as having the deepest and strongest field of any major. The top 100 players in the Official World Golf Ranking automatically qualify, meaning there is virtually no route for an unknown player to sneak in without earning it through genuine ranking points. This has given the event a reputation for producing worthy champions rather than surprise winners.

The trophy awarded to the champion is the Wanamaker Trophy, named after Rodman Wanamaker, the department store magnate who proposed the creation of the PGA Championship in 1916. It is the largest and heaviest of all four major trophies — winners traditionally struggle to lift it above their heads for the victory photographs.

Quail Hollow Club — 2026 Venue

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
Previous PGA Championship: 2017 (Justin Thomas)

Quail Hollow Club is a private golf club in Charlotte, North Carolina, and one of the premier tournament venues on the PGA Tour. It has hosted the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour for many years, giving the players familiarity with its tree-lined layout and undulating terrain.

The course is particularly well known for its closing stretch, nicknamed "The Green Mile" — holes 16, 17, and 18. This demanding run of holes has decided more than a few PGA Tour events, and when the PGA Championship was last held here in 2017, it played a central role in the outcome. Justin Thomas won that championship by two shots, and the Green Mile on the final day tested every contender to the limit.

The 16th is a lengthy par 4 with water on the left. The 17th is a short but tricky par 3, and the 18th is a demanding par 4 that finishes in front of the clubhouse. When the pressure is on in a major championship, The Green Mile is as formidable a closing sequence as any on the major rota.

Notable PGA Championships

2021 — Kiawah Island

Phil Mickelson, Age 50

Phil Mickelson became the oldest major champion in history when he won the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, aged 50 years and 11 days. The Ocean Course at Kiawah played tough and over par, but Mickelson held off Brooks Koepka in a dramatic final round. It remains one of the most extraordinary achievements in major championship history.

2018–2019 — Brooks Koepka

Back-to-Back Titles

Brooks Koepka became the first player since Tiger Woods (1999-2000) to win back-to-back PGA Championships, claiming the title at Bellerive in 2018 and Bethpage Black in 2019. Koepka also won the US Open in 2017 and 2018, making him one of the dominant major champions of his era.

2024 — Valhalla

Xander Schauffele Ends the Wait

Xander Schauffele had come agonisingly close to major titles several times before finally breaking through at the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla, shooting -21. It was one of the lowest winning scores in PGA Championship history and ended years of near-misses for the American, who followed it up by winning The Open Championship at Royal Troon weeks later.

2000 — Valhalla

Tiger's Dominant Era

Tiger Woods won the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla, the same venue that would host the event again in 2024. It was part of one of the most dominant stretches in major championship history, as Tiger won eight of the 11 majors he entered between 1999 and 2002. His four PGA Championship wins (1999, 2000, 2006, 2007) are a modern-era record.

British & Irish Players at the PGA Championship

Several British and Irish players have excelled at the PGA Championship over the years, with Rory McIlroy's 2012 victory at Kiawah Island standing as the standout result for UK and Irish golf fans.

Rory McIlroy
Northern Ireland — PGA Champion 2012

McIlroy dominated the 2012 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, winning by eight shots with a score of -13. It was his second major title (following the 2011 US Open) and confirmed him as one of the best players in the world. He has also contended strongly at numerous subsequent PGA Championships.

Justin Rose
England — Multiple contender

Justin Rose won the 2013 US Open and has been a consistent presence near the top of PGA Championship leaderboards throughout his career. A consummate ball-striker and world No. 1 in 2018, Rose has never quite broken through at the PGA Championship but remains a factor whenever the event is played.

Lee Westwood
England — Former world No. 1

Lee Westwood spent time as world No. 1 and came close at all four majors, but the PGA Championship eluded him despite several high finishes. His consistency over two decades placed him among the elite players never to win a major — one of the game's great what-ifs.
