What is the Solheim Cup?

The Solheim Cup was first played in 1990 and is named after Karsten Solheim — the Norwegian-American founder of Ping Golf, who donated the trophy and helped establish the competition. It takes place every two years, alternating between venues in the USA and Europe, and is contested by 12 players per side in the same match play format as the Ryder Cup.

How the Format Works

The Solheim Cup uses exactly the same format as the Ryder Cup — three days of match play split across foursomes, fourballs, and singles.

Foursomes (Alternate Shot)

Two players share one ball, taking alternate shots throughout the hole.

Fourballs (Best Ball)

Each player plays their own ball; the better score from each pairing counts.

Singles

All 12 players per side face off individually on the final day — 12 matches, 12 points.

28 points are available in total. The first team to 14.5 points wins. If the scores finish level at 14-14, the holder retains the trophy.
